The results of drinking and driving:
- Death, permanent disability or serious injury to yourself or other road users.
- The Criminal Procedures Act, 1977 (Act No. 51 of 1977) provides very harsh sentences for drunk driving. Fines of up to R120 000 or 6 years’ imprisonment have previously been imposed. In addition, the AARTO Act, 1998 (Act No. 46 of 1998) and its regulations provide for an automatic 6 demerit points on the driver who is convicted of drunk driving, which ultimately may lead to the suspension or cancellation of a driving license.
- Your drivers’ license suspended for a minimum of 3 months for the first offence, a year for the second and 5 years for the third.
- A criminal record, making it difficult to get a job or obtain credit facilities.
