The Punishment

The results of drinking and driving:

 

1. Death, permanent disability or serious injury to yourself or other road users.
2. The Criminal Procedures Act, 1977 (Act No. 51 of 1977) provides very harsh sentences for drunk driving. Fines of up to R120 000 or 6 years’ imprisonment have previously been imposed. In addition, the AARTO Act, 1998 (Act No. 46 of 1998) and its regulations provide for an automatic 6 demerit points on the driver who is convicted of drunk driving, which ultimately may lead to the suspension or cancellation of a driving license.
3. Your drivers’ license suspended for a minimum of 3 months for the first offence, a year for the second and 5 years for the third.
4. A criminal record, making it difficult to get a job or obtain credit facilities.
